Lenten Season at Zion
Good Friday Cantata - On Good Friday, the choirs of Zion Lutheran ans Trinity Lutheran of Princeton will join to present John W. Peterson's cantata, "Hallelujah, What a Savior." The work will feature soloists from both choirs. You will not want to miss this addition to our Good Friday service.
Ash Wednesday and the Lenten
Season at Zion
- The word Lent means, “Spring.” Lent functions within the
church year as
springtime for the soul. In the spring we plan, clean out, and prepare
the
gardens for the growing season coming soon. We sort through clothes and
household possessions, do major house cleaning, and open the windows to
let in
the fresh air. Lent is the season when we turn toward God and think
about how
our lives need change and renewal. This is also a time to remember our
baptism,
and how that gift gives us a new start every day! The color for Lent is
purple,
symbolizing repentance. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday (Feb. 17th)
and
lasts for 40 days (not including Sundays) and ends on the Saturday
before
Easter Sunday. The color for Ash Wednesday is black, the color of the
ashes.
Participants in the Ash Wednesday service receive a cross of ashes on
their
foreheads. We remember how Christ was betrayed, how we betray others,
and how
our earthly bodies will betray us. We
hear the words: “From dust you came, to dust you will
return.” We put on the
ashes of mortality. Traditionally, Lent was the time for new believers
to give
up their old ways and learn the faith so that they might be baptized on
Easter
Sunday.
Lenten
Lunches: The Sign of
Jonah - The
theme for this year’s Ecumenical Lenten Lunches is—Jonah!
Yes, Jonah. Sound’s
fishy doesn’t it? But it’s a natural fit. When the Jews
asked Jesus for a sign,
he said, “I will give you only the sign of Jonah.” After
three days in the
belly of the earth, Jesus rose with news of God’s prodigal grace.
This series
of special services for Lent explores the meaning of the “Sign of
Jonah” as we
follow Jonah on his journey…and Jesus on his way to the cross.
Join us each
week at 11:30 for a time of worship, reflection and a wonderful bowl of
soup
with friends.
